Power to X Energy/Innovation Engineer

Job Description

DP Energy is seeking a motivated engineer for a graduate role within our expanding Power to X (PtX) division.

The Power to X Innovation Projects Engineer will work on innovative projects aimed at advancing renewable energy solutions to support DP Energy’s international business strategy. The successful candidate will help DP Energy in developing a portfolio of renewable energy projects across various countries including Ireland, UK, Canada, and Australia, which are at various stages of development. Current projects include development of onshore wind, offshore wind, tidal, solar, battery and hydrogen/power to X technologies. The successful candidate will report to DP Energy’s Power to X Manager and support the development of a portfolio of renewable energy projects. Typical activities include, engineering analysis related to power to X projects, development of business cases, applications for government supports/funding, and project management of projects under active development. The Engineer will support the broader team by participating in relevant industry bodies.

Location: The role will be based in either DP Energy’s Cork City offices or DP’s Buttevant Offices Occasional travel to conference and industry events may be required

Responsibilities

  • The Power to X/Innovation Engineer will be involved in Power to X innovation projects to align with DP Energy’s international business strategy.
  • Work with the PtX manager in monitoring the evolving hydrogen policy and regulatory framework across Europe, Ireland, GB and in the other markets where DP Energy operates by attending relevant industry committees, working groups, trade fairs, conferences (e.g. Hydrogen Ireland, Hydrogen Europe, Wind Energy Ireland, Energy Storage Ireland, Renewable UK etc).
  • Contribute to reviewing and inputting to relevant consultations and industry body position papers.
  • Assist in project specific PtX feasibility assessments, PtX project development, and the implementation of PtX strategies for DP Energy’s portfolio of projects.
  • Collaborate in the development of new engineering Scopes of Works (SoWs) and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) with team members. Engage in the preparation of development consent applications, coordinating consultancy studies, surveys, and technical designs.
  • Conduct research and model project-specific electrolyser power supplies (from wind/solar/hybrid) while analysing electrolyser output and potential offtake opportunities.
  • Research local and international hydrogen demands, regulatory framework and PtX plant requirements, including connection agreements, codes, standards, and specifications, etc.
  • Stay up to date with relevant markets to facilitate technical discussion within the team.
  • Provide preliminary designs in cooperation with Engineering and Land Teams
  • Provide technical assessment of equipment suppliers and definition of equipment design,
  • Support the PtX Manager in managing key stakeholders including transmission and distribution system operators, consultants, contractors, suppliers, etc.

Requirements:

Essential  

  • A degree in Energy, Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent field.
  • A keen interest in the renewable energy sector.
  • The ability to manage own workload to meet timelines on a number of potentially simultaneous projects.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with other members of the team and with external organisations.
  • A team-oriented mindset with exceptional interpersonal skills.

Desirable

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Completion of a final year or masters project in a field related to renewable energy.
  • Previous experience working in or being placed in an energy development company, such as a work placement.
  • Proficiency in preparing technical specifications and other technical reports.
  • Experience with third-party management, including the development, contracting, and oversight of external contractors.
  • A proactive can- do attitude and the ability to learn quickly on the job.
